How Licensing Works in Alabama
Alabama regulates private security and private investigation through two separate state boards. The Alabama Security Regulatory Board (ASRB) licenses and regulates contract security companies and individuals working as Security Officers and Armed Security Officers. ASRB oversight includes licensing requirements, background-check processes, and training standards for regulated security roles.
Private investigation is regulated separately by the Alabama Private Investigation Board (APIB). The APIB administers licensing for Private Investigators and Private Investigator Apprentices, and it also regulates Private Investigation Agencies. Alabama’s investigative licensing framework includes eligibility requirements and statutory restrictions on performing private investigation work without proper licensure.
In practice, Alabama should be treated as a split-regulator state: security and investigative compliance workflows are distinct, and company-level licensing (where applicable) must be coordinated with individual licensing for personnel performing regulated services.

Operational Notes for Multi-State Firms
Alabama’s security and private investigation regimes are administered by different boards and should be managed as separate compliance tracks. Firms expanding into Alabama should confirm entity-level licensing requirements for the relevant service line and ensure each individual performing regulated work holds the appropriate active state license.
