How Licensing Works in Kansas

Kansas maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private investigative services administered by the Kansas Attorney General under K.S.A. 75-7b01 et seq., commonly referred to as the Private Detective and Security Operations Act.

The statute requires licensure for individuals acting as private detectives and for business entities operating as private detective agencies. Licensure is issued at the state level.

Kansas does not issue a separate statewide security guard license for individual employees. Licensure attaches to the licensed private detective or private detective agency under the statutory framework.

Kansas also issues a Kansas Concealed Carry Handgun License (CCHL) under K.S.A. 75-7c. This credential is issued under a separate statutory scheme and is not itself a private security or private investigation license.

Regulation of private detective services is centralized at the state level.

Operational Notes for Multi-State Firms

Kansas requires state-level licensure for private detectives and private detective agencies through the Kansas Attorney General.

Kansas does not issue a standalone statewide security guard license.

The Kansas Concealed Carry Handgun License (CCHL) is governed under a separate statute and does not substitute for private detective licensure where required.
