How Licensing Works in Louisiana
Louisiana maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private security services administered by the Louisiana State Board of Private Security Examiners under R.S. 37:3270 et seq. The statute requires licensure of private security companies and registration of individual security officers.
Louisiana regulates private investigation through a separate statewide licensing regime administered by the Louisiana State Board of Private Investigator Examiners under R.S. 37:3501 et seq. The statute provides for licensure of individual private investigators and private investigation agencies.
The regulatory frameworks for private security and private investigation are distinct and administered by separate boards under separate statutory chapters.
Louisiana also issues concealed handgun permits under R.S. 40:1379.3 through the Louisiana State Police. This is a firearms credential issued under a separate statutory scheme and is not itself a private security or private investigation license.
Regulation of both private security and private investigation is centralized at the state level.
