How Licensing Works in Minnesota

Minnesota maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private detectives and protective agents under Minnesota Statutes §§ 326.32–326.339. Licensing is administered by the Minnesota Board of Private Detective and Protective Agent Services within the Department of Public Safety.

The statute provides for licensure of private detective agencies and private detectives. It also provides for licensure of protective agent agencies and protective agents. A “protective agent” includes individuals performing private security services as defined by statute.

Licensure is required prior to engaging in regulated services. Both agencies and individual licensees are regulated at the state level.

Minnesota does not operate a separate municipal licensing regime for private detectives or protective agents under this statutory framework.

Firearms permitting is governed under separate Minnesota statutes and is not itself a private security or private investigation license.

Regulation of private detective and private security services is centralized at the state level.

Firearms credentials are governed under separate statutory provisions and do not substitute for private detective or protective agent licensure.
