How Licensing Works in Missouri

Missouri maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private investigators under RSMo Chapter 324. Licensing is administered by the Missouri Board of Private Investigator and Private Firearm Investigator Examiners.

The statute provides for licensure of private investigators and private investigation agencies. Individuals performing private investigative services must be licensed or registered in accordance with Chapter 324.

Missouri does not maintain a statewide licensing regime for private security guard agencies or individual security guards under Chapter 324. Security guard licensing, where required, is generally governed by municipal ordinances.

Missouri issues concealed carry permits under RSMo § 571.101. This firearms credential is issued under a separate statutory framework and is not itself a private security or private investigation license.

Regulation of private investigation services is centralized at the state level.
