How Licensing Works in Montana

Montana maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private security services and private investigators under MCA Title 37, Chapter 60. Licensing is administered by the Montana Board of Private Security.

The statute provides for licensure of private investigator companies and private investigators. It also provides for licensure of private security guard companies and private security guards.

Licensure is required prior to engaging in regulated services. Both agencies and individual licensees are regulated at the state level.

Montana also issues concealed weapon permits under Title 45, Chapter 8 of the Montana Code Annotated. This permit is governed under a separate statutory framework and is not itself a private security or private investigation license.

Regulation of private security and private investigation services is centralized at the state level.
