How Licensing Works in New Hampshire

New Hampshire maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private investigative and private security services under RSA 106-F. Licensing is administered by the New Hampshire State Police Permits and Licensing Unit.

The statute provides for licensure of private investigative agencies and private investigators. It also provides for licensure of security guard services and registration or licensing of individual security guards as defined by statute.

Licensure or registration is required prior to engaging in regulated services. Both business entities and individual licensees are regulated at the state level.

New Hampshire issues licenses to carry pistols and revolvers under RSA 159. These firearms licenses are governed under a separate statutory framework and are not themselves private security or private investigation licenses.

Regulation of private investigative and private security services is centralized at the state level.
