How Licensing Works in North Carolina
North Carolina maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private investigative and private protective services under N.C. Gen. Stat. Chapter 74C. Licensing is administered by the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board within the Department of Public Safety.
Chapter 74C regulates private investigators, private investigation businesses, security guard and patrol services, armored car services, close personal protection services, and related private protective services professions as defined by statute.
The statute provides for licensure of private protective services businesses and registration of individual employees performing regulated services. Licensure or registration is required prior to engaging in regulated activities.
Firearms registration and armed guard requirements are addressed within Chapter 74C and related administrative rules. Separate concealed handgun permitting is governed under other provisions of North Carolina law and is not itself a private protective services license.
Regulation of private investigation and private protective services is centralized at the state level.

Operational Notes for Multi-State Firms

Firearms authorization for armed personnel is addressed within Chapter 74C and does not replace required business licensure or employee registration.
