How Licensing Works in North Dakota

North Dakota maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private investigators and private security service providers under N.D.C.C. Chapter 43-30. Licensing is administered by the North Dakota Private Investigation and Security Board.

The statute provides for licensure of private investigation companies and private investigators. It also provides for licensure of security service providers and registration of individual security personnel as defined by statute.

Licensure or registration is required prior to engaging in regulated services. Both business entities and individual personnel are regulated at the state level.

Firearms licensing is governed under separate provisions of North Dakota law and is not itself a private security or private investigation license.

Regulation of private investigation and private security services is centralized at the state level.
