How Licensing Works in Ohio

Ohio maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private investigators and security services providers under Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4749. Licensing is administered by the Ohio Department of Public Safety through the Private Investigator Security Guard Services (PISGS) program.

Chapter 4749 provides for licensure of private investigator companies and security guard providers. Individual private investigators must be licensed under the statutory framework. Security guard employees are registered through the licensed provider and subject to statutory and administrative requirements.

Licensure is required prior to engaging in regulated services. Both business entities and individuals are regulated at the state level.

Firearms certification for armed security personnel is governed within the Chapter 4749 framework and related administrative rules. Separate concealed handgun licensing is governed under other provisions of Ohio law and is not itself a private security or private investigation license.

Regulation of private investigation and private security services is centralized at the state level.
