How Licensing Works in Wisconsin

Wisconsin maintains a centralized, statewide licensing regime for private detectives and private security personnel under Wis. Stat. Chapter 443. Licensing is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS).

Chapter 443 regulates private detective agencies, private detectives, and private security persons. Business entities operating as private detective agencies must obtain licensure. Individual private detectives and private security persons must also be licensed prior to performing regulated services.

Licensure is required prior to engaging in regulated activities. Both business entities and individual practitioners are regulated at the state level.

Firearms authorization for armed private security personnel is governed within Chapter 443 and related administrative rules. Separate concealed carry licensing is governed under Wis. Stat. § 175.60 and is not itself a private security or private investigation license.

Regulation of private detective and private security services is centralized at the state level.
